潜因性脳梗塞は、原因が不明または競合する原因が2つ以上ある場合を指し、脳梗塞の25-40%を占める。

大部分は塞栓元不明のESUSとよばれる状態で、おもに心房細動や卵円孔開存が疑われる。

脳梗塞の再発予防は原因をただしく特定することが重要なので、潜因性脳梗塞の原因を解明するべく患者を12ヶ月間しらべてみたそうな。
